Sanitas Brewing Co.’s backyard bursts into action

Driving a goal to become Boulder’s best backyard

This past weekend, Sanitas Brewing Co., located at 3550 Frontier Avenue in an industrial warehouse it shares with art hub madelife and Black Lab Sports, celebrated the grand re-opening of its new patio space, which now spans roughly 8,000 square feet and can seat up to 200 customers.

Poles with zigzagged awning stretched across steel cables flank its wooden picnic tables and a 12-foot long shipping container stages an additional service bar known as the Nest served up the expanded, beer-garden style seating spread.

“It’s where we go to roost!” said Zach, a Sanitas employee, of the Nest, as he showed us around. The Nest provides a bar station right in the middle of the beer garden space additional to the counter already in place at higher patio level, and easy access from anywhere ground level.

After a brief setback when Sanitas Brewing Co. owner Michael Memsic found brewery’s roving beer truck (Sanitas’s initial Covid-19 action response) parked outside the Colorado Liquor and Tobacco Enforcement Division earlier this summer, the brewery quickly recalibrated and refocused on home base, expanding its already popular back patio to double its size and possibly even further.

Ultimate Boulder Patio

“The goal for us,” said Michael, “really coming out of this, is like a year from now, hands down no questions asked this is the best patio in Boulder. So if that’s what you’re looking for, this is where you’ll be able to come.”

Look out, Rayback! The expansion happened fairly recently — within the month, when the brewery’s landlord gave it permission to expand its backyard as many yards as it needed up to its neighbor’s solar panels.

The shipping container known as the Nest just hit its perch Friday before last. So not only does it sit on an incredible view of the Flatirons but not the expanded backyard with its red clay and grass floors and tree-lined, railroad sideline feels like a true European biergarten.

McDevitt Taco Supply’s mobile treehouse borders the far edge of the main patio where it serves up goodness like its delicious Braised Pork Belly Taco topped with pickled cabbage and chili lime mayo, and the wooden patio itself sets a stage for bands like the Dire Wolves to play chill mountain jams with the lights strung about twinkling.

The brewery plans to continue upping its patio game as it replaces the metal seating with more wooden tables and building out its beer garden vibe.

Check it out for yourselves! The taproom and patio are open from 3PM to 10PM Monday through Wednesday and 11:30AM to 10PM Thursday through Saturday, closing just an hour early Sunday.

Definitely grab a beer from the Nest when you go; the brewery will have several only available there!
