Boulder Beer closing shop but the brand lives on

A shifting local craft brewery landscape

After a 40-year journey, the Boulder Beer, which did approximately 18,000 barrels annually, is shutting down its production facility at 2880 Wilderness Place.

Boulder Beer owner Gina Day announced the closing in a public letter on Jan. 6. Saturday, Jan. 18 will be its last day of operation.

Boulder Beer Company launched way before the craft beer boom hit the country; when the brewery first opened its doors, the U.S. had just 42 breweries. (Now the state of Colorado alone has over 375!)

The company evolved and transformed over the years to keep up with Boulder’s fast-changing beer scene, most recently hiring Boulder-based international design firm Moxie Sozo to revamp some of its most popular beers’ labels, including Shake, Mojo IPA, Buffalo Gold, Due East, Festbier and Pulp Fiction.

Boulder Beer has partnered with Denver’s Sleeping Giant Brewing Company so that its brand can live on, with Sleeping Giant now brewing, packaging and distributing the iconic Boulder Beer recipes to keep the legacy alive.

Changing local craft beer landscape

Boulder Beer’s closing coincides with the closing of Boulder seven-barrel nanobrewery Wild Woods Brewery, which will serve its last pint at its brewery taproom tomorrow at 5460 Conestoga Court.

Fate Brewing closed in 2019 and local favorite Avery Brewing Co. aims to go even bigger by selling a larger stake in its company to international brewer Mahou San Miguel, which upped its stake in Avery from 30 to 70 percent in 2019.

Needless to say, there will be some updates to our ultimate Boulder craft brewery` guide this summer.
